1. Most of your books are about friendship and love. Why did you decide to write a romantic thriller this time around?
Yes, The Secrets We Keep is my first attempt at writing a romantic thriller. Of course, I was a little nervous when I started writing it. Thrillers have always fascinated me but when it came to writing one, the thought seemed very daunting, and I was unsure whether I would be able to pull it off. But today I am satisfied with the way the book has shaped up. I hope readers love the book just as much as I enjoyed writing it. The book still has elements of friendship and romance in it, like all my other books, so fans will not be disappointed.
2. Who is your favorite character in the book and why?
I loved writing the character of Rahul—he is the protagonist in the book and the story pretty much revolves around him. He was a complicated character to write as he is battling so many personal demons like a dysfunctional family, personal issues and so on, and I think the youth will be able to relate to him easily. But personally, I loved Neerav more than Rahul. He is a character who stands by Rahul like a true brother, supporting him through thick and thin. If you have such people in your life, problems seem simpler.
3. The book is built on the premise that one’s past can never be erased. Why does this idea interest you?
What if your past came back to haunt you one day? What if emotions you had kept repressed for so long resurfaced? My mind was constantly grappling with questions like these and I thought of writing a book that would help me answer them. In the book, Rahul’s past dictates his present, not allowing him to settle. The fact is one cannot erase one’s past. But one has to understand that you cannot simply run away from it. Rahul tries to do exactly this in the book, only for the past to catch up with him. Ideas of destiny, fate, karma, past, future really excite me and I think I have many more books in me that will explore these themes in the future.
4. Going forward, will you continue to write more books in this genre?
Yes, definitely. I have enjoyed writing this book and hopefully the book is well-received for me to think of writing another thriller. In these last few years, I have written so many romance novels that my readers automatically expect them each and every time but there is a part of me that always wanted to experiment with other genres. At the end of the day all that matters is that the readers should get a good story to read, never mind what genre the book falls under.
